The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA)
has invited bids for additional
berthing and an adjacent stacking yard at Mombasa port. Ships calling on the strategically
important
port have experienced delays in getting container berths and there are
problems
berthing larger container ships. The loss of transit business is of
advantage
to competing ports such as Dar es Salaam and South Africa.
Mombasa has
had growth in the volume of container traffic,
which is larger than was anticipated. Despite the dire situation facing
shipping at times in the recession, the port of Mombasa recorded good traffic performance last year.
The port
handled a total of 19.06 million tonnes of cargo up from 16.415 million
tonnes 2008,
a growth of 16.1 per cent.
