Council Leader Ali Thomas "This is an important day for Briton Ferry Dock. For the first time in 60 years we will see a passenger ship sail up the river and remind people of the time when the dock was a vibrant and thriving port thanks to the genius of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. This is the only event in South and West Wales to celebrate this landmark anniversary and I'm pleased Neath Port Talbot Council is able to help make this happen."

Dr Tilo Burghardt University of Bristol Department of Computer Science “We are developing the software for a system that will be able to automatically recognise features of White Shark dorsal fins using 'computer vision' technology, and then archive the animal information along with their IDs. We hope it will be usable within two years, with members of the public able to participate."

Prof Paul Bates Bristol’s School of Geographical Sciences “This is the first time we've been able to actually measure the amount of PROF PAUL BATESwater that flows every year from the Amazon River channel to its floodplain and back again. You can't do this work from the ground because of the vast area and difficulty of getting around, so satellites and models really are the only options. The work is important as we currently don't know how much water flows from the Amazon into the ocean, or the route that water takes to get there. These new measurements tell us more about both of these things, and provide a baseline from which we can look for future changes in the Amazon flood wave.”

Ed Stafford Amazon Walk "It's unbelievable to be here. It proves you can do anything. If this wasn't a selfish, boy's-own adventure, I don't think it would have worked. I am simply doing it because no one has done it before. To wake up the morning after and know that we've done it will be a big change. I think we'll get used to it, though.”

Leila Deen Greenpeace Climate Campaigner “The oil business is a "sunset industry" and the world needs to move away from an addiction to oil to clean technology which would tackle climate change and create new jobs. It's time to go beyond oil. A handful of powerful companies are taking huge risks with the natural world and our climate instead of developing the clean tools we need to fight climate change and end our crippling addiction to fossil fuels."

An enjoyable uptempo animated story and song about Magellans voyage to the East Indies. Full video inside Ballad of Magellan  We can see some of the devastation happening in the Gulf, on shore and on the ocean surface. But what is happening on the deep sea floor, an environment some people might call a desert? Twenty years ago a test oil well was proposed to be drilled off North Carolina, an area known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic. In 1990, Marine Grafics and UNC-TV produced a documentary on the work of scientists studying the potential drill site. This eight-minute clip takes viewers on a submarine voyage to examine the deep ocean floor, the largest ecosystem on the planet.Oil Spill - Deep Sea Secrets

NTDTV | August 10, 2010 The deathtoll in a mudslide in northwest China continues to climb today. More than 300 have lost their lives, and more than a thousand are missing. Cries of grief echoed through the northwest Chinese town of Zhouqu on Tuesday that was half-smothered by a mudslide three days ago. The death toll in Zhouqu, in a narrow valley in Gansu Province, jumped from 137 earlier on Monday evening to 337, according to a local official. That number is sure to grow, with around 1,100 people still missing, possibly buried under mud and rocks that engulfed much of the town. But the slurry of mud that devastated the worst hit areas has complicated rescue efforts and dimmed hopes of finding people alive. Some relatives criticized the rescue efforts. But some locals pointed the finger of blame at the destruction of forests. Experts said the landslide, which carried mud and rubble over three miles, may have been caused by the 2008 Sichuan earthquake loosening the mountainside.Hundreds dead China mudslide(2)
Construction of the Hambatota port which is built in southern Sri Lanka began in January 2008 and is scheduled to commence its initial operations by November 2010. Upon completion, it will be Sri Lanka's second largest port, after the Port of Colombo and will service ships travelling along the east west shipping route which is estimated to be around 36,000 ships, including 4,500 oil tankers (annually) which passes six to ten nautical miles south of Hambantota. The first phase of the port project will provide bunkering, ship repair, ship building, and crew changes facilities. Later phases will raise capacity of the port up to 20 million TEUs per year. When completed, the port will be the biggest port constructed on land to date in the 21st century.Hambantota Sea Port Sri Lanka
