Rear Adm. Jonathan Bailey Director Noaa Office of Marine and Aviation Operations “NOAA Ship Bell M. Shimada represents a major step forward in NOAA’s effort to modernize its fleet of fisheries, oceanographic and hydrographic survey ships. This highly capable ship will enable researchers to collect data on sea life and habitats with unprecedented accuracy.”

Steve Murawski Ph.D Noaa’s Chief Scientist for Fisheries “NOAA Ship Bell M. Shimada will play a vital role in supporting NOAA’s mission to protect, restore and manage living marine, coastal and ocean resources. Equipped with the latest technology, this new vessel will enhance significantly our ability to conduct research essential to sustaining and rebuilding fisheries.”

Beatrice Olivastri Chief Executive Officer Friends of the Earth Canada "Cruise ship companies are taking advantage of Canada's weaker laws on sewage discharge to save money. It is bizarre that B.C. residents should bear the burden of cruise ship pollution from well-heeled tourists.”

Professor Ross Klein Memorial University St. John's, N.L “B. C. is now the toilet bowl of the West Coast of North America. In Canada, there are no regulations in discharging water without any further monitoring. 25 to 27 "small floating cities," go to Alaska and back each week, and I have "no doubt" they dump waste in Canadian waters every trip”. Before these laws were implemented, a similar set of "voluntary guidelines" were recommended. In the U.S., treated sewage can be dumped three nautical miles away from the coastline, but the difference between Canada and the U.S. is in their perspectives on grey water and making sure these rules are enforced. In Canada, any amount of grey water can be dumped anywhere and rules have not been created to control grey water disposal, while the U.S. forces cruise ships to make sure the waste is sufficiently treated to meet water quality standards.”

Fred Felleman Marine Conservation Consultant Seattle “Agreements between Washington State, local ports and the Northwest Cruise Ship Association, which represents most cruise ship companies, were put in place around 2004.

UK – NORTH ATLANTIC - 24 AUGUST 2010
mackerelThe mackerel war
with Iceland and Faroe Islands
VIDEOCAPTION FROM THE POSTED VIDEO : Consider the cod. It is a common species of fish, unremarkable in taste or activity. It is a rather unprepossessing fish, its main ability is to produce huge quantities of young. Yet, this dull fish was the cause of two NATO allies going to the brink of war. Between November 1975 and June 1976, Great Britain and Iceland confronted each other over Iceland's proclaiming its authority over the ocean up to 200 miles from its coast. The issue was the amount of cod caught by British and Icelandic fishermen. This "war" consisted of British fishing trawlers having their nets cut by the Icelandic Coast Guard and numerous rammings between Icelandic ships and British trawlers and frigates. The "war" caused Iceland to threaten to close the NATO base at Keflavik, which would have had major repercussions on the ability of NATO to defend the Atlantic Ocean from Soviet incursions. With this threat hanging over its head, plus the international trend towards a 200 mile economic exclusion zone, and the economic cost of the conflict, Great Britain agreed to have its fishermen stay outside Iceland's 200 mile economic zone without specific agreements.

Britain and the EU are on the brink of a mackerel war like the cod wars of the 1970s with Iceland and the Faroe Islands. The two have unilaterally awarding themselves the lion's share of north Atlantic stock in a move that the EU has condemned and one that has angered the UK fishing industry...
