Mike Singh CEO Ministry of Tourism “The cruise company plans a facility on the southern point of the peninsula as a welcome centre for tendered cruise passengers. This project suggests that the developers are interested in introducing a niche brand of cruise tourism into that region, aiming at small cruise ships with non-fixed itineraries. Input from community and environmental groups will be considered, in addition to the impact of this proposal on employment and economic benefits, as well as on sites and attractions.”

Robert Hallberg Co -author NOAA Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory “According to our simulations, these hypoxic areas will be peaking in October. Oxygen drawdown will go away slowly, as the tainted water is mixed with Gulf waters that weren’t affected. We’re estimating a couple of years” before the dead zone has dissipated.”

Leila Deen Greenpeace Campaigner “To see a huge drilling rig in this beautiful and fragile environment is deeply shocking. The tragic oil disasters in the Gulf and in China this year clearly illustrate the need to go beyond oil. Companies like Cairn need to leave the Arctic alone and start developing the clean tools that will actually help us get off fossil fuels for good.”

Steve Murawski Ph.D Noaa’s Chief Scientist for Fisheries “NOAA Ship Bell M. Shimada will play a vital role in supporting NOAA’s mission to protect, restore and manage living marine, coastal and ocean resources. Equipped with the latest technology, this new vessel will enhance significantly our ability to conduct research essential to sustaining and rebuilding fisheries.”

Professor Ross Klein Memorial University St. John's, N.L “B. C. is now the toilet bowl of the West Coast of North America. In Canada, there are no regulations in discharging water without any further monitoring. 25 to 27 "small floating cities," go to Alaska and back each week, and I have "no doubt" they dump waste in Canadian waters every trip”. Before these laws were implemented, a similar set of "voluntary guidelines" were recommended. In the U.S., treated sewage can be dumped three nautical miles away from the coastline, but the difference between Canada and the U.S. is in their perspectives on grey water and making sure these rules are enforced. In Canada, any amount of grey water can be dumped anywhere and rules have not been created to control grey water disposal, while the U.S. forces cruise ships to make sure the waste is sufficiently treated to meet water quality standards.”
